Before you clean your dog, put on rubber gloves and check the dog for any injuries. If the dog was bitten or scratched in the altercation with the skunk, call your veterinarian for advice. Find a place to bathe your dog. Outdoors is best, but you can also use a laundry room or bathroom that is easily cleaned. Make sure the area is well ventilated. Put a small amount of eye lubricant or mineral oil in your dog's eyes to protect it from the cleaning solution.
Get a large plastic container or bucket to mix the cleaning solution. Combine 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap. Dilute the solution with warm water if you need to cover a larger dog. Mix the solution well, and use it immediately.
Massage the cleaning solution into your dog's coat. Do not wet the area with water before you apply the solution. Avoid getting the solution in dog's eyes, ears and mouth.
Let the solution remain on your dog for at least 5 minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water. You can repeat the process, mixing a new batch of cleaning solution each time if the skunk odor persists.
