Look in dark places, such as cabinets and closets, to locate the source of the mildew odor.
Remove paper products, such as newspapers and cardboard, from the location. These items may contain mold spores that you cannot see. Throw away anything that has visible mold growth.
Wash fabrics located near the source of the mildew odor. Clean carpeting on the floor of the area.
Mix 1 cup of bleach in a gallon of water. Clean the walls and floor where you located the mold or mildew. Let the area dry completely.
Open a box of baking soda and leave it near the source of the mildew odor. Replace the box once every 60 days.
Use charcoal briquettes in a coffee can to absorb odors instead of baking soda. Replace the briquettes once a month. You can also use cat litter in a plastic shoebox alleviate the odor. Replace the litter every two weeks.
