According to Paul James of HGTV, using granules of castor oil is a great way to get rid of gophers. The granules act as a natural repellent and help to control gophers, moles and armadillos. As an additional benefit, castor oil granules can help contribute to the health of a garden.
- Spread the granules
Castor oil granules should be applied at a rate of 1 pound per 1,000 square feet. A spreader can help make the task less arduous, but it may be difficult to properly calculate the amount of granules that have been dispersed. If dealing with a large property, spread the granules over all lawn and garden beds.
- Water the granules
After applying the granules, you can either water them yourself or wait for the rain. Once the granules dissolve, they release a scent that begins to drive the pests away.
- Direct the gophers away
When distributing the granules in a large property, focus on forcing the pests to head in a certain direction, preferably an exit point of the property. To direct the gophers, place and water the granules at a point farthest away from the exit. Repeat this process a day or two later, but water and place the granules closer to the exit point. Continue this process until you reach the border of the property.
