Get rid of fruit flies by purging the house of overripe fruit and vegetables, cleaning surfaces and containers where food is stored or prepared, and sterilizing drains. Make a fruit fly trap with a jar, some plastic wrap and vinegar.
- Purge the house of overripe produce
Throw away or store in sealed containers any produce that is overripe, split open, leaking juice or cut up. This includes not only all kinds of fruit, but also potatoes and onions. Move compost waste outdoors, and be sure the outside compost bin is far away from the house.
- Clean the kitchen
Because bits of food and drops of juice attract fruit flies, keep all surfaces wiped clean. Do a complete kitchen cleaning. Lift small appliances to wipe under them. Scrub the stove top. Look for spills under the furniture and refrigerator, and give the floor a thorough mopping. Empty and clean garbage containers.
- Sterilize the drains
Fruit flies breed in drains and garbage disposals. To kill the flies and sterilize the area, pour boiling water down the drains.
- Make a trap
Pour about an inch of apple cider vinegar in a jar or glass. Cover the container with plastic wrap or a plastic baggie. Poke one or more small holes in the plastic. The fruit flies are attracted to the vinegar. Flies enter the container, are unable to leave and drown in the vinegar. Alternatively, use fruit juice, wine, or water and yeast as bait.
