Getting rid of corn earworms is a process that takes a varying amount of time depending on the severity of the infestation. In order to get rid of corn earworms, you need mineral oil, access to an insect store and an insecticide of your choosing.
- Release soldier beetles near your corn
Purchase several soldier beetles and allow them to run free near your corn. They kill and consume the corn earworms over time. However, if the beetles are not quick or efficient enough to get rid of the earworms, you may need to use other methods.
- Apply mineral oil to the corn
Use your hands to rub mineral oil into the silk of the corn. You should focus on the area where the silk leads into the actual ear itself. Earworm larvae cannot breath when surrounded by mineral oil. This will suffocate all of the earworm larvae and can help curb future populations and infestations of the pests.
- Apply insecticide
Evaluate whether or not the other methods have taken care of your earworm problem. If you still have an infestation, you will need to purchase an insecticide of your choosing. Read the safety instructions on your particular insecticide carefully. The chemicals in insecticides can be deadly to humans and other beneficial insects as well as the corn earworms.
