To get rid of bed bugs, launder all linens. Place any other potentially infected items in the dryer to loosen the bed bugs and their eggs, and then vacuum the items. Prevent future infestations by sealing points of entry and putting a cover on the mattress.
- Clean infected items
Remove blankets and sheets from the bed. Take any curtains and clothing that may be infected, and wash them in a washing machine on the highest heat setting possible.
- Place items in the dryer
Place any items that can't be washed in the dryer for at least 30 minutes. Shoes, stuffed animals and pillows are common items of this type.
- Scrub the mattress
Scrub the seams of the mattress with a stiff brush. This dislodges bedbugs and their eggs.
- Vacuum infested areas
Thoroughly vacuum the bed and all surrounding areas. Do this multiple times. Dispose of all vacuum bags in a tied garbage bag, and place it in an outdoor trash can.
- Prevent future infestations
Remove any clutter near the bed where bed bugs can hide. Fill any cracks or crevices in the walls or windows. Fix peeling wallpaper, screen doors and any other points of entry.
- Seal the mattress
Encase the mattress in a tightly woven zippered case for at least one year. This prevents any remaining bed bugs from being able to feed.
