Eliminate house ants naturally by mixing borax with powdered sugar in a 1:3 ratio. Place small containers of the mixture in the areas where ants roam. Do not kill visible ants, but allow them to carry the mixture back to their colony where it kills the population.
In homes where small children or pets might eat the powdered-sugar mix, consider mixing water, sugar and borax. Soak cotton balls in the solution, and place them in shallow dishes near locations of ant activity.
Spray white vinegar near any visible ant trails to deter the insects. For larger surfaces, dip a sponge into a vinegar solution and wipe the area. Allow the vinegar to remain on the surface to dry. Keep all spills of food cleaned up to prevent attracting the pests.
Carpenter ants cause damage to the wood builders used in construction. Unlike household ants, carpenter ants do not carry food back to the nest. Home occupants should kill them in their nests. Sprinkle diatomaceous earth around the nest of the carpenter ants. This natural shell material is from the ocean and sharp to the carpenter ants. As individual ants crawl across the diatomaceous earth, it cuts their tough exoskeletons and causes them to die.
