To replace the filter on a GE refrigerator, shut off the power and water, disconnect the old filter, connect the new filter, flush it, connect it to the refrigerator, restore the water supply, and plug in the refrigerator. The required supplies are pipe tape and a wrench.
Slide the refrigerator out from the wall, unplug it, and close the water supply valve. Set an empty bucket beneath the filter housing, detach the filter from the wall, and disconnect it from the water line. Set the filter in the bucket.
Remove the fittings from the old filter, clean them with a rag, and wrap them with pipe thread tape. Place the fittings on the ends of the new filter, and tighten them with a wrench. Connect one end of the filter to the water supply line, tighten it with the wrench, hold it over the bucket, and open the water supply valve. Close the valve when water emerges from the filter.
Connect the other end of the filter to the refrigerator water intake line, and tighten the connection with the wrench. Return the filter to its housing, and open the water supply valve. Plug in the refrigerator, and push it back against the wall.
