To replace a casement window crank, open the window, remove the wheel from the track, remove the crank, and purchase an identical replacement. Fasten the new crank, and slip the wheel back onto the track.
- Open the window
Open the window by turning the handle on the crank. If this doesn’t work, remove the crank knob handle by prying it off. Turn the crank knob manually with a small adjustable wrench or pliers to open it.
- Remove the wheel from the track
Remove the wheel from the track by slipping it out through the notch opening on the track. Ensure that the notch opening and the wheel at the bottom of the crank arm are aligned before slipping it off.
- Remove the crank
Use a flat-head screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the crank to the window. You may need to remove window trim covering the crank if any exists. For a trim with screws, use a small flat-head screwdriver to unfasten the screws holding the trim to the crank. For a trim with no screws, gently use a small pry bar to pry off the trim.
- Purchase a replacement crank
Buy the same type and size of window crank as the original for the best result. Take the old window crank with you in case you are unsure of which one to purchase.
- Fasten the new window crank
Use a small flat-head screwdriver to fasten the new window crank in the same position as the original.
- Slip the wheel back onto the track
Align the crank arm wheel with the bottom track notch, and slip it back into position. Replace the window trim if any was removed.
