Effective repellents for mosquitoes contain the chemical DEET, although experts warn there may be risks associated with using high concentrations of DEET and safer methods should be tried first. Using a plant-based repellent or implementing bug avoidance tactics are practical alternatives.
Plant-based repellents contain naturally occurring ingredients like citronella, eucalyptus or castor oil to deter mosquitoes. Follow the application directions for the best results. To avoid mosquitoes in general, stay inside during sunrise, sunset and early evening hours, when bugs are most active. If outside during mosquito hours, cover up exposed areas with loose clothing, socks and closed-toe shoes. Running a fan while sitting outside and keeping mosquitoes from breeding in watery or damp areas around the yard will also keep these biting insects at bay.
