How Do You Repair an Ice Maker?

There are simple steps one could take to troubleshoot and repair a faulty ice maker, including adjusting the freezer temperature and checking for faulty parts. One could easily correct the problem with a few simple steps and very little tools.

  1. Adjust the freezer temperature

Check the freezer temperature. Reduce the temperature if it is above 10 degrees Fahrenheit, as the ideal temperature is between 0 and 5 degrees. Clean the condenser coils if the temperature remains above normal.

  2. Check the water inlet valve

Inspect the water inlet valve for erosion or malfunction. Water has to pass through it in order for the unit to function. Replace the faulty valve if necessary.

  3. Check the door switch

The ice maker may not dispense ice if the door switch does not properly work. When correctly functioning, it turns on the light in the freezer and turns off the ice maker. Failure to turn on the light may indicate that the door switch is malfunctioning. The door switch will need to be replaced if it is not working correctly.

  4. Check the water filter

The water filter in the ice maker may be clogged. Clean or change the water filter for it to dispense purified ice.

  5. Check the water pressure

Inspect the water pressure in the home. The pressure may be too low. Some ice makers have specific requirements for water pressure, and if the water pressure is too low, they may malfunction. If water pressure is the problem, you may need to consult a professional plumber to determine the cause and resolve the issue.
