Repairing a chipped granite countertop requires a granite repair kit, a utility knife and fine grit sandpaper. Clean the area to be repaired thoroughly with a mild detergent and warm water, rinse well and dry fully before beginning. The filling process takes about 10 minutes plus extra time for curing.
Mix the stone powder to form the right shade
A granite repair kit contains separate pouches of pulverized stone in different colors. Mix the colors together to get a shade that matches your countertop.
Mix the binding agent and catalyst into the powder
Stir the provided binding agent into the powdered stone to form a smooth paste. Add the catalyst as directed in the kit. This turns the paste into a strong glue. Do not add the catalyst until you are ready to fill the crack, because the mixture starts hardening quickly.
Fill the cracks in the countertop
Press the prepared paste into the chipped area with the applicator provided in the kit. Press firmly to get the paste deep into the crack and to remove air bubbles.
Smooth the repair
Use the utility knife to scrape off any extra filler paste. Use fine grit sandpaper to finish the smoothing process. Let the countertop cure for the length of time recommended in the repair kit instructions before using it.
