Empty the water from the cracked birdbath before moving it to a workbench or other safe, sturdy surface in a dry, covered location.
Dip the sponge or soft cloth in a solution of one part household bleach to 10 parts water to sanitize the birdbath and remove algae and other substances from the surface. Let the birdbath air dry after cleaning.
Apply the waterproof silicone caulk to the crack with the putty knife until the caulk seals the entire crack.
Allow the caulk to dry for at least 48 hours. Inspect the seal to see whether or not it needs additional caulking.
Spray the repaired crack with ceramic sealer to provide additional sealing and protect the birdbath from natural deterioration and wear. Don't refill the birdbath with water until after the sealer dries for at least 48 hours.
