Polyester curtains often turn yellow as they age. There are several ways to fix this problem at home. This method requires stain remover, oxygen bleach, laundry detergent, clothespins and a clothesline. It takes about two days and works with all polyester curtains, including lace.
Inspect your curtains for stains and spray them with stain remover. Treat the front and back sides of all stained areas. Put the curtains in a bucket or hamper and leave the stain treatment on overnight.
Soak the fabric
Place a scoop of powdered oxygen bleach in your washing machine, select the hottest water temperature and engage the pre-soak setting. Add the curtains to the water when the machine is half full. Turn the washer off, shut the lid and soak the fabric for at least an hour. Severely yellowed curtains benefit from overnight bleaching.
Drain the washer and rinse the curtains.
With the curtains still in the washing machine, drain the bleach water and run the rinse cycle.
Wash the curtains
Set the washing machine to a gentle wash cycle with hot water. As the tub fills, add one scoop of oxygen bleach and one scoop of laundry detergent.
Dry the curtains in sunlight
Take advantage of the natural bleaching power of sunlight and dry the curtains outside. When this is not possible, dry them indoors on a clothes rack.
