According to Men's Fitness, sweat smells can be removed from laundry by pre-treating the odorous garments with a solution. The solution should consist of 1 ounce of laundry detergent, juice squeezed from a whole lemon and 1/2 gallon of warm water.
Once the solution is prepared, the first step is to scrub the armpit areas and necklines of the affected garments. The next step is to machine wash the garments in warm water and add 2 ounces of white vinegar during the rinse cycle. The last step is to tumble dry the garments at a low temperature. It is important to avoid using liquid fabric softener during this process, as it can interfere with water absorption.
A homemade paste consisting of baking soda and water works well to neutralize sweat odors. The paste can be applied directly to the odorous areas or added to the washing-machine water during the pre-soak process. Adding 1/2 cup of dry baking soda directly to the wash water is also a beneficial home remedy. Between washes, scented laundry boosting products work well to increase the aroma of scented laundry detergents on clothing. Laundry boosters are added to the washing machine prior to adding the laundry, and they keep clothing fresh by increasing the power of regular detergent to penetrate stains and odors deeply.
