How Do I Remove Sticky Tape Residue From Plastic?

To remove sticky tape residue from plastic, apply a hot vinegar solution, wipe the adhesive off, freeze any remaining residue and scrape it off with a razor blade. This 45-minute procedure requires a bowl, hot water, vinegar, liquid dish soap, a razor blade, paper towels, a towel and a freezer.

  1. Mix the solution

Fill a large bowl halfway with hot water. Add a generous squirt of liquid dish soap, and pour in 1/4 cup white vinegar. Fold several paper towels into a pad, and soak them in the hot solution.

  2. Apply the hot paper towels to the adhesive residue

Lay a towel on a flat surface, and set the plastic object on it. Remove the paper towels from the bowl, and lay them over the sticky tape residue. Do not wring them out before you place them. Keep the paper towels on the adhesive for about 15 minutes.

  3. Scrape the residue with a razor blade

Remove the paper towels. Gently scrape the sticky tape residue with a razor blade, and wipe the blade on a clean paper towel after each stroke.

  4. Freeze the plastic

To remove tough bits of residue that withstood the hot cleaning solution, set the plastic in the freezer for 15 minutes. Remove it, set it on a flat surface and scrape off the frozen residue. Sweep the adhesive fragments onto a paper towel and discard them.
