Remove skunk odor from dog fur using baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and liquid dish detergent. Before mixing the solution, check the pet’s eyes for signs of irritation and rinse them with cool water. Keep the pet outside so it does not transfer the odors to furniture or other items inside.
The pet is likely to be very upset by the spray, so put it in an outdoor kennel to keep it safe while preparing the liquid. Mix 1 quart of hydrogen peroxide with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. Put on rubber gloves and apply the solution to the dog’s fur. Use your gloved hands to gently scrub the pet’s fur to remove the scent. Rinse the solution from your dog’s coat and wash using your normal pet shampoo. Towel dry the pet’s fur and keep it in a warm room to prevent chills.
Discard any excess solution, as the gases it produces build too much pressure to store safely in a bottle. If your pet is sprayed by skunks often, consider purchasing a commercially available product to remove the scent. If you do not have the ingredients for the homemade solution on hand, use a dilute solution of vinegar in water to wash the pet’s fur.
