Remove rust from metal by spraying it with a solution made from one part lemon juice and one part borax and letting the mixture remain on the metal for 30 minutes. Rinse the item with clean water, and buff it dry. Repeat the process for extensive rust buildup.
- Mix lemon juice and borax
Mix equal parts of lemon juice and borax in a spray bottle for large items or in a bucket for smaller items.
- Spray or soak the rusted item
Spray the rust thoroughly with the lemon juice-borax mixture, or immerse smaller items directly in the solution.
- Soak the rusty items for 30 minutes
Wait 30 minutes for the solution to work on the rust.
- Rub rusty areas with a rag
Scrub the rust spots with a rag to loosen bits of rust from the metal.
- Rinse well with warm water
Rinse small items by holding them under running water. Rinse large items with a rag and a bucket of warm water. Rinse the rag frequently, and change the water as necessary.
- Dry thoroughly
Dry the item with a soft cloth.
- Repeat if necessary
If rust remains, repeat the entire process. The second time, focus on spraying the solution into nooks and detailed areas. Thick rust sometimes requires a third treatment.
