How Do You Remove Rotten Clam Odor?

Chlorine bleach, vinegar and baking soda can be used to remove rotten clam odors inside refrigerators and on other hard surfaces, such as ice coolers. The process of removing odors can take several days and may require several different treatments to completely eliminate.

  1. Clean the area thoroughly

Remove all food items from the refrigerator, and wash and rinse with soap and water. Make a solution with 1 tablespoon chlorine bleach and 1 gallon of water, then wash the inside of the refrigerator with the mixture. Remove drawers and shelves to disinfect and wash them separately. Allow the refrigerator to dry by leaving the door open, then sprinkle the inside of the refrigerator liberally with baking soda. Allow the baking soda to sit for several hours before removing.

  2. Wipe the interior surfaces with vinegar

Use a solution made with 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water to clean the inside surfaces of the refrigerator or cooler. Allow the mixture to air dry.

  3. Place coffee grounds in the area

If odors remain, set a bowl of dried coffee grounds inside the refrigerator and freezer, or in the ice cooler, and allow the bowl to remain for up to a day.
