Remove odors from a garbage disposal by cleaning the unit and adding citrus fruits or peels to release fresh-smelling oils. Most odors are due to bacteria growing on particles of food that stick inside the machine.
Fill the sink about half full of hot water, add a grease-dissolving dish detergent, open the drain, and turn on the disposal. The additional water allows the disposal to move the soap through the unit for cleaning. Turn the disposal off, and unplug it from the wall or turn off the circuit breaker. Continue the cleaning process by dish brush to scrub all the parts you can reach. Restore power to the disposal.
Clean the grinding mechanism by adding a tray of ice cubes to the unit. Turn on the disposal and add 1/2 cup of coarse salt. As the machine grinds these materials, it scrubs away any stuck material from the unit. The salt has antibacterial properties and helps to kill odor-causing bacteria.
Peels of citrus fruits, such as lemons or oranges, are natural deodorizers. After cleaning the disposal, place a few of these peels in the unit, and turn on the water. Turn on the disposal. As it grinds the peels, it releases the oils and destroys odors.
