Use baking soda to remove odors from clothing by presoaking the garments in a baking soda solution and adding baking soda as a detergent booster during the wash cycle. You can also use baking soda in place of fabric softener for additional odor removal.
- Presoak smelly laundry
Dissolve a cup of baking soda in warm water. Fill a laundry sink with cool water, and add the baking soda solution. Place smelly clothing, such as those you wear to the gym, in the sink, and allow them to soak overnight. Drain the water.
- Boost the power of detergent to remove smells
Move the clothing to the washing machine. Add the normal amount of laundry detergent to the load along with 1/2 cup of baking soda, and wash on the appropriate cycle. Baking soda helps neutralize the pH of the water so that the detergent is more effective at removing bacteria and odors.
- Replace fabric softener with baking soda
Add 1/2 cup of baking soda to the rinse cycle in place of fabric softener. The natural mineral helps suspend any detergent remaining in the machine so the clothing remains soft. Its natural deodorizing properties replace the artificial perfumes manufacturer's use in fabric softeners. Baking soda also does not have the oils found in fabric softeners, which tend to trap odors in clothing.
