To remove the mildew odor from a basement apartment, stop any water leaks, reduce the humidity in the air and clean any mildew from surfaces in the apartment. Place a box of baking soda in each room to absorb any remaining odor.
- Stop water leaks
Check the plumbing for any leaks and repair them. If the basement walls or floors seep water, make sure the ground around the basement slopes away from the building. Apply waterproofing to the walls if necessary.
- Lower the humidity
When the weather permits, open the windows to allow fresh air in. Keep the windows closed when it is raining or the outside humidity levels are high. If the air remains humid, install a dehumidifier.
- Clean any mold or mildew from the apartment
Use a mixture of bleach and water to clean any hard surfaces coated in mildew. Launder any moldy cloths or linens used in the basement. Pay careful attention to laundry rooms and bathrooms where humidity levels tend to be higher.
- Place a container of baking soda in each room
Place an open container of baking soda in each room of the apartment. The baking soda absorbs the odors for up to three months.
