To clean refrigerator shelves, remove them from the fridge, and if they are made of glass or ceramic, allow them to come to room temperature. Wash the shelves thoroughly with warm soapy water, and leave them to air dry.
Plastic and metal shelves can be immediately washed with moderately hot water and any non-abrasive dish soap and scouring pad. If there are dried spills and stains on the surfaces, soak the shelves for about 10 minutes in warm, soapy water to dislodge the dirt. Clean the edges and rims with a soft toothbrush to remove dirt that has caked into grooves and pattern lines.
Shelves made of glass and ceramic must be allowed to come to room temperature before they are washed with warm or hot water. Pouring hot water onto a cold glass shelf may crack it. Wash these shelves with a liquid or gel detergent and a soft scouring pad. Wearing dishwashing gloves may help to prevent glass shelves from slipping out of soapy hands. After washing and rinsing the shelves, leave them on a rack to air dry. Before putting them back into the fridge, wipe them with a dry soft cloth to completely remove any traces of moisture.
