Homemade bug spray often includes essential oils such as lavender or peppermint, vegetable oil and aloe vera gel. Combine ingredients in a spray bottle and apply to different areas on the skin or apply directly to clothing.
Essential oils such as rose geranium repel ticks, while other essential oils like citronella, repel mosquitoes, flies and gnats. Combine 10 to 25 drops of one or more essential oils, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera gel to create an effective bug spray.
Organic apple cider and white vinegar also help repel a variety of insects. Replace vegetable oil with almond oil, neem oil or olive oil. Add vinegar and essential oils. Combine and apply to skin and clothing as necessary. When combined with other ingredients, vodka and witch hazel also help repel insects.
Safe for adults and children, homemade bug sprays can be used on animals as well. Reduce the amount of essential oils to 1 or 2 drops and apply to the animal's collar as needed. Use homemade bug spray to repel insects in yards or in enclosed spaces. Mix water and vinegar and spray in dark corners or outside to repel spiders. Essential oil and lemon juice also help keep spiders from nesting indoors.
