Vinegar, bleach, baking soda, powdered enzymatic dishwasher detergent or a commercial washer cleaner, such as Affresh or Smelly Washer, can all be used to eliminate odors. Bad smells in a front-loading washer are caused by mold growth and often worsened by the machine's airtight design.
The rubber door seals, detergent dispensers and drain pump trap should be cleaned at least monthly. Wipe underneath the door seal with a 50 percent mix of water and either white vinegar or bleach. Remove the dispensers and clean them with a brush or pipe cleaner to reach trouble spots. Clean the traps of hair and lint. Run an empty load on the hottest setting while using a washer cleaner, then leave the door open and allow the machine to completely air-dry.
