Because of exaggerated claims and false advertising, Consumer Affairs states that the Amish Fireplace made by Heat Surge is not worth the purchase. The company claims that the portable heater is free, but it charges for shipping and the wood frame crafted by Amish workers.
Some of the advertising Heat Surge uses for its heater show Amish people using the product, but consumers have pointed out that the Amish community doesn't use electricity or allow for their photos to be taken, according to Consumer Affairs. The company also claims that the heater generates 5,119 BTU, but any 1,500-watt heater does the same. Heat Surge also says that the heater reduces heating bills, but this is only true if the heater is used one room at a time and if every other room is kept cooler.
