The storm cellar building plans on the Family Handyman website provides both written instructions and illustrations of the parts of the storm cellar. Click on either the Project tab for a written description of the plans or on the Step By Step tab for stepwise procedures for building the shelter. The latter also includes information on wind zones in the United States, safe room design options and a link to the FEMA booklet.
The Survival Mastery website shows photos of steps of the storm shelter construction project, including digging and concrete framing. The guide also discusses shelter size variations according to local weather conditions.
The guide on the National Storm Shelters website includes among its steps finding the right location, choosing shelter dimensions, choosing material (such as galvanized steel or concrete), choosing extra material and using excavation equipment.
