Does a Plumber or an Electrician Install a Garbage Disposal?

Depending on what electrical issues there are when installing a garbage disposal, a plumber and an electrician may be needed; if replacing an existing unit and the electrical connections are the same on the new disposal and the one being replaced, then a plumber can easily do the job. If the type of disposal is different or the electrical connections need to be modified or installed, then a plumber and an electrician are required.

There are two kinds of disposals commonly used in homes: one that uses a wall mounted switch to turn it on, and one that turns on automatically when food is fed into it. If a homeowner switches from one to the other, a plumber will be needed to install the disposal and an electrician will be required to install or disable a wall switch.
