Small heaters can be purchased at home-improvement stores such as Lowe's, through online retailers such as Amazon.com and at retail chains such as Target. Small heaters are often called space heaters, and they are typically used to heat a single room or a portion of a room.
Many different manufacturers produce space heaters, including Honeywell, Lasko, Vornado and Holmes. Most space heaters plug into a wall outlet and are small enough that users can easily move them between rooms. Some small heaters come with a remote control to let the user operate the unit from across the room.
The two main types of small heaters are radiant heaters and convection heaters. Traditional space heaters are radiant heaters and work by emitting heat into the room to warm up people and objects directly in front of them. Convection heaters blow heated air into the room, which raises the overall temperature. Modern convection heaters often include a thermostat that tracks the room temperature, so the heater can turn on and off as needed to maintain a set temperature. Oscillating heaters spread the flow of heated air over a larger area, and small ceramic heaters can keep up a steady flow of warm air for long periods of time using less energy.
