Local, independent retailers offer the best selection and customer service when shopping reliable large kitchen appliances, says Consumer Reports. When shopping small appliances, the consumer agency says Amazon offered the widest selection and Costco had the best prices as of a 2014 survey.
A number of retailers sell well-known kitchen appliance brands such as GE, Kenmore, Samsung and Maytag. In addition to mom-and-pop shops, consumers can find reliable appliances at chains such as Lowe's, Home Depot, Sears, Best Buy, HHGregg, Target, Walmart or Kmart.
As of a 2014 J.D. Power report, brands ranking highest for reliability overall included Samsung, LG and Kenmore Elite. Kenmore Elite ranked highest in the study for side-by-side refrigerators and dishwashers, and LG ranked highest for top-mount freezer refrigerators. Samsung ranked highest for ranges, ovens and over-the-range microwaves. Individuals shopping for reliable refrigerators may want to shop at stores carrying LG or Kenmore Elite while homeowners with oven needs might look to retailers carrying Samsung, based on the J.D. Power study.
Since brand reliability varies from model to model, however, consumers should read reviews and consumer reports on appliances before making a purchase. A glance over reviews on retailer sites, including Amazon, can help shoppers identify common reliability problems with certain models or brands.
