To paint marble tile, wash the tile, rinse it thoroughly, sand the tile, then apply primer, paint and a protective urethane coating. You need liquid detergent, paint brushes, fine-grit sandpaper, warm water, a bucket, an oil-based primer, paint and urethane. This process takes a few hours to complete.
- Clean and sand the tile
Mix a liquid detergent with warm water in a bucket, and stir the mixture to form a lather. Moisten a sponge with the solution, wring out the excess cleaner, and clean the tile. As you clean, soak the sponge again as needed. Rinse the tile with clean water to remove the soap residue, and let the tile dry. Once it is dry, sand the tile in circular motions using fine-grit sandpaper.
- Prime the tile
With a paintbrush, apply two coats of oil-based primer to the tile according to the manufacturer's instructions. Let the primer dry completely between coats.
- Paint the tile
Using a paintbrush, apply an oil-based paint to the marble tile, filling all crevices with paint. Allow the paint to dry, making sure to ventilate the room properly. When the paint has dried, use a paintbrush to apply a coat of urethane to protect the tiles.
