  1. Mask nearby surfaces

Close the door. Mask the frame with masking tape and masking paper. Cover the garage floor, driveway and nearby grass with plastic tarps.

  2. Remove the existing paint

Chip off the existing paint with a paint scraper and a wire brush. Pour a gallon of water into a bucket, and add 1/2 cup trisodium phosphate. Dip a rag in this solution, and wash the door. Do not rinse it.

  3. Prime and sand the door

Apply one coat of spray primer, and let it dry for one hour. Sand the door with 220-grit sandpaper, and dust it with a dry cloth.

  4. Apply three coats of paint

Apply one coat of spray paint over the sanded primer. Start at one of the upper corners, and move the can in parallel horizontal lines. Wait one hour, and then apply a second coat. Start in the same corner, but apply the paint in vertical rows. Let the paint dry for one hour, and apply a third coat. Do not unmask or raise the door for at least an hour.
