To paint a front door, remove it, wash and sand it, then apply primer. Paint the door with an angled sash brush and a paint roller. The process takes approximately two days to complete.
- Remove the door
Take off the hinge pins. With the help of another person, lift the door out of its place. Remove the doorknob.
- Clean and prep the door
Wash the door with a sprayer or a hose. Use a sponge to wipe debris off the door. Let the door dry completely overnight. Sand the door to ensure that the surface is smooth.
- Apply the paint primer
Prime every side of the door to prevent moisture from seeping into the wood. Let the primer dry completely before applying paint. Sand the door again if any of the surfaces feel rough.
- Paint the door
Place the door on top of two sawhorses. Work from the top to the bottom of the door. Paint the corners of the panels first with an angled sash brush. Paint the front and back using a paint roller. Work your way around the rest of the door. Apply several coats of paint, making sure to wait until each coat dries before applying another.
