What Are Some Other Uses for Dawn Dish Detergent?

Additional uses for Dawn dish detergent include eliminating fleas from your pets, pretreating laundry spots, cleaning driveway spots and unclogging drains. Dawn dish detergent is biodegradable and does not contain phosphates. Biologists use it to clean the feathers of birds after oil spills.

Dawn kills fleas without the harmful pesticides most flea products contain. It is safe for use with young pets for which other flea preventatives are not. For puppies and kittens, 1/2 teaspoon per gallon of water helps to eliminate fleas. For larger pets, the amount increases to 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. The bather should rinse the pet thoroughly with water after the bath to prevent any residue that might irritate the skin.

Dawn works to pretreat most oil-based stains, including food stains, lipstick and motor oil. It is also effective on some types of ink. The user should apply full strength Dawn to the stain before washing as normal.

Dawn cleans oily spots from driveways. The process begins with applying kitty litter to absorb excess oil and then sweeping it away. The next step is the application of dawn to the spot and scrubbing with a brush before rinsing it away.

Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of Dawn to a pot of hot water, and pour the mixture into a clogged drain to help eliminate the clog. The heat, along with Dawn's grease dissolving ability, can save the cost of a plumber.
