You can remove insulation safely using a large capacity shop vac or a specialized HEPA-filter insulation removal vacuum. Both types are available at equipment rental facilities. Home vacuums are not recommended for removing insulation.
In addition to using a certain type of vacuum, when you remove insulation you should wear a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, dust mask, safety goggles and hat. These coverings keep the insulation away from skin, lungs, eyes and hair.
To prevent insulation from getting into other parts of the house, some do-it-yourselfers tape up large rolls of plastic sheeting to isolate the insulating material in the attic. For further protection, empty the contents of a full vacuum into a large, heavy-duty trash bag and seal it tightly.
