While there are several items essential for equipping a first kitchen, Fox News recommends sticking with the basics, such as a saute pan. All metal saute pans work for stovetop and oven cooking. Saute pans should be heavy for their size.

As its name implies, a good stockpot is essential for making stocks. Stocks form the basis for many soups. The stockpot is large enough to boil the right amount of salted water needed for perfectly cooked pasta and vegetables. The other pan needed in the kitchen is a smaller saucepan. One with a lid and handle is easier to maneuver on the stove and provides maximum versatility.

Knives are essential in preparing food. Fox News recommends starting with an 8-inch chef's knife and a paring knife. Cutting boards protect the counter top and the cutting edge of the knife. Cutting boards made of glass, marble or other hard materials dull the knife. Thick plastic cutting boards go in the dishwasher for easy cleanup and disinfecting.

Wooden spoons are affordable additions to any kitchen. They work well for mixing and do not scratch nonstick surfaces. They reach the corners that a square spatula leaves untouched.

Tongs are a great addition for cooking and serving food. They allow the cook to turn a steak without dropping it on the floor. A 10- or 12-inch pair is easy to handle and ideal for most uses in the kitchen.
