It is possible to connect a refrigerator ice maker to the cold water pipe using either a plastic or a copper tubing kit. If a valve is already in place behind the refrigerator, the installation requires a length of tubing but not the kit.
Some kits include a saddle valve that allows the installer to pierce through the water line to establish the connection. When installing the kit, the installer leaves the excess tubing coiled behind the refrigerator. This coil serves as a spring mechanism to allow the owner to move the refrigerator for cleaning and to absorb the vibration that could otherwise loosen the connection.
