What Are Some Natural Snake Repellents?

All natural oils are effective snake repellents that can be applied in snake-prone areas. Plants like marigold and wormwood produce smells that naturally repels snakes around backyards and gardens. Snake-proof fences are ideal deterrence to the movement of serpents into unwarranted areas.

Natural oils like cinnamon and clove are effective in repelling snakes. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS), eugenol found in natural oils is a poison on the porous snake's skin. Their strong smell is offensive to their snake which repels them naturally. The natural oil solutions can also be mixed with strong pepper to cause discomfort to the snakes.

Certain plants like marigold, wormwood, West Indian lemon grass, Sarpgandha and garlic are natural repellent against snakes. As stated by Hibiscus Coast Seconds, these plants have bitter tastes and strong smells that cause discomfort and disorientation to snakes when they slither over them. They can be planted around homes and gardens to chase away serpents which cannot tolerate their strong odors.

A snake-proof fence around the garden or yard naturally prevents the entry of snakes. This is done after clearing the areas around the home. An effective snake fence should be above 6 inches and slanting in angle. This prevents the snake from scaling the fence into the garden.
