According to etiquette specialist Emily Post, for an informal place setting, the napkin is placed to the left of the plate, either beneath or just beyond the forks. Alternately, it could be located in the center of the dinner plate.
To finish the table setting, put knives to the right of the dinner plate with their edges turned toward the plate. Spoons are placed to the right of the knives. Any glasses belong in the spot directly above the knives and spoons. The salad plate goes to the left of the forks and the bread plate rests above these utensils. A butter knife rests diagonally across the small plate.
