Prices for smooth-top ranges vary from $550 to over $2,500, as of March 2015. The differences in price reflect options such as coil heating, halogen bulbs or induction heating, as well as quality of the range.
While smooth-top ranges are easier to clean, cooktops equipped with standard coils under the glass take more time to heat and use more energy. Halogen-bulb stoves use less energy, but require pans that make direct contact with the cooktop. Induction ranges are the most energy-efficient smooth-top ranges, but are also the most expensive option. Unless the kitchen is already equipped with magnetic cookware, the induction range requires buying new pots and pans.
