Full Answer

Dual-flush systems work by giving the consumer two options to flushing the toilet. Using either a two-button system or a dual-handle system, the user can use the top button, or lift the handle up, for liquid waste. For solid waste, the bottom button is pushed, or the handle is pushed down.

Using a dual-flush system uses half the amount of water when flushing liquid waste. However it uses the same amount of water for flushing solid waste. The water savings are greater for older toilets that use 3.5 gallons of water per flush than newer toilets that use only 1.5 gallons of water.
