As of 2015, Sears offers direct drive washing machines ranging from $699 for the 4.2-cubic-foot Samsung unit to the $1440 5.2-cubic-foot LG front-loading unit. Load capacity, brand name and whether the unit loads from the front or the top all affect the price.
Special features, such as the option to download customized wash cycles from your smartphone, also increase the cost. Direct drive motors accomplish the same task with fewer parts. This is why these washing machines are more energy efficient and often come with a longer warranty than traditional belt driven washers. Also, their overall noise emission is usually lower.
