Identify depression-patterned glassware by comparing its pattern to a pattern guide. A pattern guide contains examples of a pattern along with date of manufacture. Manufacturers have produced depression glassware in patterns including cherry blossom, horseshoe and iris.
Some online pattern indexes allow the user to search based on their glassware's attributes and the manufacturer name, if known.
Early American patterned glass was produced in an estimated 1,200 patterns, examples of which are available online. Other manufacturers reproduce some patterns, so an extra resource such as a collector's encyclopedia may help with further identification.
Crystal stemware is generally identifiable by maker's emblem rather than by pattern. Some companies etched their logos into the bottom of the stem.
