Maytag is owned by Whirlpool, and it manufactures an entire Performa series that includes dishwashers, washers, dryers, stove ranges and refrigerators. Maytag Performa refrigerators are available as bottom-compartment freezer models and top-compartment freezer models, according to the Maytag website. As of 2015, Maytag Performa top-compartment freezer models are manufactured in Amana, Iowa.

Founded in 1893 by Frederick Maytag, the company began as the Maytag Washing Machine Company, and it thrived throughout the Depression in its hometown, Newton, Iowa. At Maytag's peak, it employed one in four Newton residents. The Newton Maytag plant closed in 2007.

In 2009, Maytag recalled 1.6 million refrigerators, including some of the Performa series, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. An electrical failure in the component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor posed a serious fire hazard, but the affected refrigerators only included Maytag Performa top-compartment freezer models in black, bisque, white and stainless steel.

Maytag also manufactures its dishwashers, washers, dryers and stove ranges in the United States, though there are also some Maytag plants in Mexico.
