As of 2015, eight appliances fall under the Amana umbrella. The eight appliance categories manufactured by the Amana company are refrigerators, freezers, ranges, microwaves, hoods and vents, dishwashers, washers and dryers.
Amana appliances are sold at major stores, including Sears, Lowes, The Home Depot, Best Buy and H.H. Gregg, as well as smaller, individually owned appliance retailers.
Amana Appliances was started in 1934 in Amana, Iowa. Native Iowan George Foerestner, founder of The Electrical Equipment Company, was challenged with building a beverage cooler. He succeeded, and in 1936, Amana Appliances began selling cold storage lockers for commercial use. The company was bought by Maytag Corporation in August 2001.
