To make a porch light into a motion sensor, add a motion sensor to the light socket, and add the light bulb to the motion sensor's socket. You need a screwdriver, a motion sensor light, flood lamp bulbs and a non-contact electrical tester. The project can be completed in under an hour.
- Remove the current light bulbs
Turn off the breaker that powers the light bulbs in the fixture you wish to add a motion sensor to. Remove the bulbs, and loosen screws on the fixture with a screwdriver.
- Test the wires
Using a non-contact electrical tester, test for power by holding the tip against the black wires in the box. If the tester lights up, make sure all other applicable breakers are off.
- Attach the motion sensor
Attach the mounting bracket for the motion sensor to the box with screws. Place the watertight gasket over the wires. Connect the wires as directed on the motion sensor package. Replace the fixture by placing it over the mounting bracket and tightening the screws until the fixture is secure.
- Add the light bulbs
Screw flood light bulbs into each fixture. Adjust the position by loosening or tightening the screws on the arm of the fixture as necessary.
