To make laundry smell good, add baking soda to the wash water and vinegar to the rinse cycle. Drying clothing outside on a sunny day can also add a fresh, clean scent to clothing that fabric softeners and laundry detergents cannot duplicate.
Sour laundry or even just smells clinging to washed clothes that are less than fresh make the laundry seem dirty, even if it is clean. Try one or more of the following, for laundry that smells great:
- Add baking soda
- Use a vinegar rinse
- Dry clothes in the sun
Use either a baking soda detergent or add 1/2 cup baking soda to the wash water. Baking soda helps to neutralize bad odors. Baking soda can even be added to clothes in the hamper to start working on odors before the clothes are washed.
Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the rinse cycle. This can be done with the machine's built-in fabric softener dispenser or with fabric softener dispenser balls which are added to the washer during the wash cycle.
Hanging clothes to dry in the sun can help to remove stubborn odors. Spread the clothes out on the line and secure them with clothespins to ensure the clothes do not end up all over the yard. Check on the clothing after about an hour, and then every half hour after that to make sure it is dry before bringing it in.
