To make a homemade wood smoker, build a base out of cement blocks. Run a large metal vent pipe through one side of the base. Build a brick firebox around the opposite end of the pipe. On top of the base, build the smoker frame out of 2-inch-by-4-inch wood beams. Cover the frame with 1-inch-by-4-inch planks, and install a door on the front.
When building the smoker base, line the floor with bricks or cement pavers, and stack cinder blocks around the floor. The sides of the base should be approximately 1.5 to 2 feet tall. Leave a hole in one side of the base to install a vent pipe. Fill in the gaps around the pipe to prevent the smoke from escaping.
The firebox should be smaller than the smoker base. Construct it out of bricks and mortar around the other end of the pipe. Use a fire-safe metal door on the smoker.
Build a rectangular wooden frame for the smoker, and set it on top of the base. Once the top of the smoker is covered with wood planks, cut a small hole for a chimney, and insert a metal pipe. Build a wooden roof over the chimney to keep out precipitation and debris.
Purchase or build a wooden door. Cut a hole in the front of the smoker to fit the door. Attach meat hooks and hanging rods to the inside of the smoker. Hang the door with hinges, and install a lock or latch to prevent it from opening during smoking.
