How Do You Make Homemade Laundry Detergent?

To make homemade laundry detergent, mix baking soda, grated bar soap and washing soda. To make liquid laundry detergent, it is necessary to dissolve the bar soap and powdered ingredients with hot water before combining them. Homemade laundry detergent requires less than an hour to make.

  1. Grate the bar soap

Grate a bar of Castile soap, and set it aside. Heat 6 cups of water to boiling, and add 2 cups of the grated soap to the water. Stir the mixture over low heat until the soap has dissolved. Remove the mixture from the heat source, and allow it to cool slightly.

  2. Add the dry ingredients

Mix 2 cups of washing soda and 2 cups of baking soda, and add the mixture to the hot water and soap. Stir the mixture until the powders have dissolved. Pour the mixture into a large container, and add an additional 2 gallons of water. If desired, add essential oil to the detergent to scent it.

  3. Store the detergent

Store the detergent in a lidded container, such as a clean 5 gallon bucket, and use 1/4 of a cup of detergent per load of laundry. Stir the detergent before use if the ingredients separate.
