Make homemade fabric softener by using just vinegar or a simple fabric softener mixture that includes vinegar, water and hair conditioner. For a powder softener, use a mixture containing baking soda and Epsom salt as main ingredients.
Add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the final rinse of a load of clothes for an easy softener. To reduce the vinegar smell, use a simple fabric softener mix instead. Mix 2 cups of hair conditioner with 3 cups of white vinegar and 6 cups of warm water. Pour the mixture into a bottle and shake it up a few times. Adding a few drops of essential oil can make the mixture smell even better.
Mix 2 cups Epsom salt, 1/2 cup of baking soda and 20 to 30 drops of essential oil to make fabric softener powder. Stir the essential oil into the salt before mixing in the baking soda. Pour the mixture into a container with a lid that fits tightly. Add 2 to 3 tablespoons to each load before rinsing.
Making homemade fabric softener is more economical than buying fabric softener. Homemade fabric softer may also be healthier to use as it does not contain some of chemicals found in store-bought fabric softener.
